Papaha, the gallery’s namesake, began his artistic journey as a teen. He was drawing countless cartoons and sci-fi illustrations. He initially pursued computer engineering at UCSD. But the influence of Allan Kaprow, Chip Lord, Lewis Hawk, and Phil Cohen led him to a Studio Visual Arts degree. Papaha’s senior year artwork gained national attention, even gracing the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
A significant chapter unfolded. Papaha embarked on a study of meditation and spirituality with Sri Chinmoy. After ten years of dedicated practice, he received the name “Papaha.” He remains an active member of the Sri Chinmoy community. This spiritual journey profoundly shaped his artistic vision.
Papaha believes art should evolve towards the Divine. He seeks to reconnect art with the common person. His creative process shifted from the mind to the heart, and eventually, to the soul. He puts his intention into practice at Papaha’s Gallery & Studio.
Over four decades, Papaha’s artwork has been showcased in San Diego, the Bay Area, Houston, and New York. He has contributed to stage designs for off-Broadway productions and Peace Concerts. He served as artistic director for Guinness World Record feats. He sculpted record albums and designed furniture. Major corporations have utilized his digital and print design skills.
Papaha’s commitment extends to the local community. He created a fundraising art show for the San Diego Children’s Hospital, which donated over $4500. He also founded Art Around Adams. It is an event that highlights local performance art, painting, and sculpture in Normal Heights and Kensington.
Today, Papaha focuses on large oil pastel drawings. Sculptural installations, digital art, and site-specific digital projections also fill his time. At Papaha’s Gallery & Studio, you can currently view works by Papaha and other artists through the windows. Private showings are available by appointment.
