The whispering reeds of Boondall Wetlands beckon. This isn’t just any suburb. Boondall holds a secret history a story woven into the very fabric of its land.
Boondall nestled near Moreton Bay. Its name itself a whisper from the past. An Aboriginal word meaning either ‘crooked creek’ or ‘cunjevoi’ a plant that once thrived here. The Turrbal people knew this land intimately. They were its custodians for millennia. They lived off its bounty. The coastal forests and estuaries provided sustenance.
Imagine this area before urbanisation. Farmers tilled the earth. The Catholic Church owned much of the land. But long before that the Turrbal people were here. Their lives intertwined with the rhythms of nature.
Boondall State School opened its doors in 1925. Generations of children have learned and played within its walls. Its Arbor Day trees stand as silent witnesses to time’s passage. A heritage-listed railway footbridge nearby echoes with the sounds of trains long gone.
Near the Boondall railway station lies the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Ice dancers Torvill and Dean graced its stage in 1986. Since then it has hosted countless concerts and shows. A vibrant heart in this quiet suburb.
The Boondall Wetlands. A thousand hectares of protected land. A sanctuary for over 190 bird species. A testament to the beauty of nature’s resilience. The wetlands almost didn’t exist. A proposed development in 1985 threatened this precious ecosystem. Thankfully it was saved.
St Matthew’s Anglican church once stood on Lyndhurst Road. It closed in 1988. It was transformed. It became the Gayatri Mandir a Hindu temple. A symbol of Boondall’s evolving cultural tapestry.
Boondall Methodist Church later became the Boondall Uniting Church. In 1994 it amalgamated with other churches. The Sandgate Uniting Church in Deagon now stands as a testament to this union.
Boondall’s population. In 2016 it was 9217. In 2021 it grew to 9603. People from New Zealand India England and the Philippines. They made Boondall their home. They brought their stories their languages their cultures.
