From its humble beginnings in 1931 Zion Hill Memorial Baptist Church has a rich history. Imagine Reverend Arthur James Spence and a small group meeting in a home on Fitzwater Street. They dreamed of a church. They formed the Missionary Bible Class. Their vision grew. It became Zion Hill Baptist Church of Philadelphia named after Reverend Spence’s Virginia church.

Zion Hill blossomed. Sixty members joined in its first year. The congregation moved from the Spence home to Montrose Street then to Carpenter Street. There the church was housed above a stable. The stable’s garage rented for a mere $3.50 per month. A charter was granted in 1937. After renovations the church expanded into most of the building. More properties were bought. The church continued to thrive on Carpenter Street for twenty-four years.

In 1955 a new chapter unfolded. Zion Hill purchased the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church. Worship services resumed in 1956. The congregation worked tirelessly to become mortgage-free. This was achieved in 1965. A remarkable feat of faith and communal effort. Their time at Walnut Street lasted fourteen years.

Seeking even greater space Zion Hill acquired a Presbyterian Church on 53rd and Spruce Streets. This purchase in 1969 for $275,000 marked a significant milestone. It’s where Zion Hill stands today. Reverend Spence served as pastor for forty years until his passing in 1971. His legacy shaped Zion Hill for generations.

The church faced challenges. A major fire struck in 1979. Restoration was a lengthy process. Services were held at temporary locations. The church was rededicated in 1981. This was a testament to its resilience. Several pastors guided Zion Hill through the decades. Each leader brought their unique strengths. Each pastor built upon the church’s foundations.

The church continues to grow. New ministries have emerged. These ministries include a Youth Praise Dance Ministry a Children’s ministry and a Women’s Ministry. Today Zion Hill Memorial Baptist Church is a vibrant community. It continues its mission of faith service and growth. It stands as a testament to enduring faith and unwavering community spirit.
