“A river whispers secrets to those who listen,” a voice whispered behind me. I turned to see an old woman with eyes as deep and mysterious as the woods surrounding us. “And the Mausbach? Oh, it has tales to tell.” We were standing at the edge of the Mausbachwiese, a sun-dappled clearing. The Mausbach, a small stream, gurgled merrily over a bed of stones. Don’t let its size fool you. The Mausbach, just a little over two kilometers long, starts its journey in the heart of the Odenwald forest. It eventually flows into the mighty Neckar River, right here near the grand Abtei Neuburg. The old woman pointed to a barely discernible path leading into the dense foliage. “See that path? It leads to where the Mausbach begins, a spring hidden deep within the forest. Locals say mythical creatures still gather there, sharing stories under the silver moon.” But the Mausbach holds more than just myths and legends. A little further downstream, almost swallowed by the undergrowth, lies the entrance to the abandoned Mausbach mine. This is no ordinary mine. It was once a source of manganese, a precious metal, mined three different times throughout history. Sadly, each attempt was short-lived, deemed unprofitable. The Mausbach seemed determined to keep its treasures hidden. As we walked along the stream, the air grew cooler, the scent of pine needles filling my nostrils. The woman smiled, her eyes twinkling. “The Mausbach may be small, but it’s a powerful reminder. Nature always finds a way, and some secrets are best left undisturbed.”
