Across the Moika River, the vibrant Red Bridge connects the bustling streets of Saint Petersburg. The Red Bridge isn’t just a crossing. It’s a splash of color in a city known for its elegant architecture. It’s a testament to the city’s rich history and a link to its vibrant past. The Red Bridge is officially known as Krasniy Most in Russian. It’s a single-span bridge, a striking feature against the backdrop of the Moika River. The bridge carries Gorokhovaya Street, a vital artery in the city’s network. The Red Bridge measures 42 meters in length and 16.8 meters in width, a significant presence in the cityscape. Constructed between 1808 and 1813, the original Red Bridge was a cast iron masterpiece designed by William Heste. Time and progress marched on, and in 1953, the bridge underwent a transformation. Architect V.V. Blazhevich led the reconstruction, replacing the cast iron structure with welded steel arches. Remarkably, many of the original decorations were preserved, ensuring a connection to the past. The name “Red Bridge” comes from a 19th-century tradition of color-coding the bridges across the Moika. The bridge’s sides facing the river are red, a simple yet effective way to distinguish it from its counterparts. Today, only four of these color-coded bridges remain. The Red Bridge stands alongside the Blue Bridge, the Green Bridge, and the Yellow Bridge, now renamed Pevchesky Bridge. These colorful bridges add a touch of whimsy to the Moika River.
