How about a church built in the style of old Russia? That is exactly what we see before us now. This is the Church of St. Basil the Great. It is located on Narodnogo Opolcheniya Prospekt. The Church of St. Basil the Great blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. It is near the infrastructure of the gardening center “Russian Village”.
Construction began in 1996. It finished nearly two years later. On August 19 1998 the church was consecrated. This was done in honor of St. Basil the Great. Metropolitan of Saint Petersburg and Ladoga Vladimir gave his blessing.
In folk tradition this saint helps to grow. He also helps to harvest a generous crop. Therefore he is a patron for owners of gardens. The location of the Church of St. Basil the Great near the farm market increases the number of parishioners. It also attracts those in need of earthly blessings.
The external appearance of the wooden church is striking. It is made in the Northern Russian style. A tent-like bell tower dominates the structure. It features a small onion dome crowned with a cross. The patterned covering of the dome reminds us of old analogs.
Inside the altar area is in the upper part. It is larger in diameter than the main dome. Above the entrance to the church is an icon. It blesses parishioners and depicts Basil the Great.
The parish celebrates its feast day on January 14. On this day they honor the Archbishop of Caesarea Cappadocia. Besides regular services the church hosts master classes. There are also pilgrimage trips. A воскресная school also operates here. The Church of St. Basil the Great is open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM. You can reach it by taking buses 114 and 142 from Leninsky Prospekt metro station. Get off at the stop on Schastlivoi Street.
