“What whispers do you hear from 1650 years ago?” I ask, gesturing around us. We are standing at the entrance to Yuantong Ancient Town. This town isn’t just old. It’s a living, breathing piece of history.

Yuantong was established during the Eastern Jin Dynasty around 347 AD. Originally called Shuiqu Township, it later became Yuantong. The name changed in the Ming Dynasty because of the Yuantong Temple. The temple brought monks and merchants to the area. Businesses grew, and a town was born. In the 1940s, it was officially named Yuantong, meaning harmony and smoothness. This name reflected the town’s bustling trade.

Yuantong’s location made it a vital trading hub. Three rivers converged here. These are the Wenjing, Weijiang, and Bojiang rivers. The town became an important wharf. Goods flowed in and out. Local products were exported to Leshan, Yibin, and Luzhou. Daily necessities arrived from other regions. Yuantong was a logistics center.

Imagine the scene in the Qing Dynasty. Merchants from various provinces gathered here. Guildhalls were built. The town became so prosperous that it earned the nickname “Little Chengdu.” Even today, remnants of this glorious past remain.

Look around at the architecture. Yuantong boasts well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings. Wooden houses and green tile roofs line the streets. The ancient dwellings exude charm. Walking through the streets, you will travel back in time.

Notice the blend of styles. The Luo’s Ancestral Home has Gothic-style gates. The Catholic Church, built in 1903, mixes Chinese and Western elements. The Huang’s Mansion showcases a combination of styles.

Consider the Huijiang Bridge. The original iron bridge was built during the Qing Dynasty. It was rebuilt in 1986. The bridge connects the ancient town. Pavilions adorn the bridge. They are decorated with carvings of figures, flowers, and birds.

The Yongli Bridge is the only remaining stone bridge in Chongzhou. Built during the Qing Dynasty, it features dragon heads on the pier. The bridge looks like it is lying on the back of a dragon.

The streets tell their own stories. Qilin Street is lively with restored houses. Shuangfeng Street is quieter. Shops are slowly turning into residences. Banbian Street and Dongsheng Street are rarely visited by tourists. They offer a glimpse into the town’s quieter side.

Don’t forget to try Yuantong’s delicacies. Taste the pig’s trotters, oil flower, brain flower, and tofu flower. These are the “Four Delicacies” of Yuantong.

Yuantong Ancient Town has been open to the public free of charge. Take your time to explore. Respect the cultural relics. Experience the rich history and culture. Yuantong is a place where time stands still. It is an unforgettable journey into the past. Let the whispers of the ancient town fill your soul.
