The soaring steeple of Sungrak Church pierces the Seoul sky. Does its imposing presence hint at the incredible journey this church has undertaken?

Sungrak Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and extraordinary growth. Founded in 1969 in Shingil-dong its story begins long before its cornerstone was laid. Pastor Ki-Dong Kim’s tent ministry in the early 1960s laid the groundwork. His powerful healing and preaching ignited a spiritual fire. This led to the recognition of the crucial role of discipleship.

Pastor Kim established two key ministries pastoral service and campus missions. The church initially met in a humble home. They embraced baptism by total immersion joining the Korean Baptist Convention in 1968. This pivotal decision shaped Sungrak Church’s identity. Its commitment to the Bible not just doctrines guided its early development.

In the mid-1960s Pastor Kim’s Bible studies at Seoul National University blossomed. He expanded his teaching to students from various theology schools. This evolved into Berea Academy in 1978. It became a global hub of theological learning. Many graduates now serve in pastoral roles worldwide.

The Berean Movement a blend of several movements including the ‘Resembling the Bible Movement’ propelled Sungrak Church’s growth. The church exploded from seven members to 319 in just one year. 109 were baptized within that time. By 1986 membership exceeded 30000 making it one of the world’s largest churches. This remarkable expansion earned Pastor Kim recognition. Southwest Baptist University in the USA acknowledged his contribution to church growth. They named a theory after him the ‘Ki-Dong Kim’s theory of church growth’. He became a special professor and international director.

To accommodate the church’s ongoing expansion a new building was constructed in Singil-dong in 1992. The architectural design won an award from Seoul Metropolitan City. Later the Christian World Mission Center (2009) and the World Christian Leader Center (2013) were added to the complex. Berea International Theological Seminary followed in 1997. Its motto ‘The Bible over doctrines Jesus over theology the Holy Spirit over notes’ embodies Sungrak Church’s essence.

After Pastor Ki-dong Kim passed on the leadership to Pastor Sung-Hyun Kim a new generation embraced the faith. The World Berean’s Convention successfully convened in 2013. Sungrak Church’s innovative education system continues its mission of service and growth. Sungrak Church stands as a powerful symbol of faith perseverance and global impact. Its story continues to unfold its legacy remains.
