The church wasn’t always the brick structure we see today. It began humbly, meeting in Brampton’s barn, about three miles west of Savannah. The church we admire now, built in the 1850s and completed in 1859, represents a monumental achievement. It was constructed by free African Americans and enslaved individuals, who made the bricks and built the church themselves after their days working in the fields. It was a symbol of pride and ownership, the first brick building owned by African Americans in Georgia.
