A temple built on the wishes of a shogun’s mother. That’s Gokokuji Temple. Its story begins in 1681. Keishoin the mother of the fifth Tokugawa shogun wished for a praying temple. Gokokuji affiliated with the Shingon Buddhism Toyoyama School was built to fulfill her wish. It’s the thirteenth grounds of the Edo 33 Kannon Sacred Sites.

This wasn’t just any temple. Gokokuji held a special place in the Tokugawa clan’s heart. Its main pavilion dedicated to Cintamanicakra was completed in 1697. Amazingly this intricate building was constructed in only half a year. The detailed carvings showcase the best techniques of that era. Both the main pavilion and the Gekko-den are national important cultural heritages.

Gekko-den deserves a closer look. It’s not original to Gokokuji. It was moved from Mii-dera Temple in Shiga prefecture early in the Showa period. This study room is a priceless example of Momoyama period architecture. Other treasures from the Genroku period such as documents and equipment are on display within Gokokuji Temple.

The temple isn’t just about its buildings. Behind the main pavilion lies a large graveyard. It’s the final resting place for prominent historical figures. Okuma Shigenobu Yamagata Aritomo and Sanjo Sanetomi are among those buried there. Their presence adds another layer to Gokokuji’s significance. It’s a place where history faith and remembrance intertwine.

So here you stand before Gokokuji Temple. You’ve journeyed through time. You’ve seen its stunning architecture. You’ve learned about its connection to the Tokugawa clan. You’ve discovered its role as a burial ground for important figures. Gokokuji Temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Japan’s rich history and enduring culture. Take a moment. Breathe in the atmosphere. Let the spirit of Gokokuji Temple resonate within you.
