Picture this a grand old palazzo standing proudly in Milan. This is Casa dei Morigi a place steeped in history and secrets.

Casa dei Morigi is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Milan. Its original core dates back to the 14th century a testament to its enduring presence. Today its ancient facade is mostly hidden. You can still glimpse its past glory though. Look closely at the terrace and the original tower. Restored in the 17th century they offer a peek into the palazzo’s rich history.

Step into the inner courtyard. Here you’ll find a portico supported by elegant Ionic columns. The grand staircase while rebuilt in the 18th century once boasted striking graffiti decorations. Imagine the stories those walls could tell.

Casa dei Morigi was once home to the Moriggia or Morigi marquises a family whose name is etched into the building’s very identity. Their legacy lives on in the name of the street and the surrounding area Contrada dei Morigi.

The Morigi family left the palazzo around the end of the 19th century. It was then occupied by 23 families. They created a unique cohousing arrangement typical of Milan’s countercultural movement. This period saw a surge in cultural activity within the building’s walls. Sadly a lack of funds exacerbated structural decay. This lasted until the 2000s when the Municipality of Milan demanded its return. A company subsequently undertook a restoration project. Today the palazzo has been divided and sold off in lots.

Its history is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to Milan’s past its architectural evolution and its social movements. As you stand here you’re not just looking at a building. You’re experiencing a journey through time. A journey into the heart of Milan’s enduring spirit.
