“Did the stones of Fort de l’Île Sainte-Hélène whisper secrets?” a young boy once asked his grandfather. His grandfather, a seasoned storyteller, smiled. “They certainly do,” he replied, “if you know how to listen.” Today, we stand before Fort de l’Île Sainte-Hélène, ready to decipher the whispers of its weathered stones. Built in the early 1820s on Saint Helen’s Island, this fort wasn’t just a military installation. It was a vital link in a chain of forts designed to protect Canada from a potential American invasion. While not imposing like some fortresses, Fort de l’Île Sainte-Hélène held a strategic position as the central artillery depot. It supplied forts to the west and those along the Richelieu River Valley, including the notable Fort Henry and Fort Lennox. The fort’s distinct reddish hue comes from the breccia stone quarried right here on the island, nestled in the St. Lawrence River. This locally sourced material gives it a unique connection to its surroundings. Over the years, Fort de l’Île Sainte-Hélène played various roles. It served as a military prison following the rebellions of 1837 and was even ravaged by fire in 1848, only to rise again from the ashes by 1864. And, during World War II, within these very walls, Italian internees from the UK were held. For decades, Fort de l’Île Sainte-Hélène housed the Stewart Museum. Founded in 1955 by David M. Stewart, the museum boasted a vast collection of over 27,000 artifacts. These objects offered glimpses into Canada’s colonial past, particularly the era of New France. Sadly, the museum closed its doors in 2021, a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its collection found a new home at the McCord Museum in downtown Montreal. Now, as we gaze upon Fort de l’Île Sainte-Hélène, remember its rich and layered history. It stood as a guardian against invasion, a prison, a museum, and a silent witness to the passage of time.
