The Concorde, a marvel of Anglo-French engineering, revolutionized air travel. It first took to the skies in 1969, a symbol of technological prowess and international collaboration. Imagine crossing the Atlantic in under three hours, twice the speed of sound. This was the Concorde’s promise, a reality for those who could afford the hefty price tag. This particular Concorde, the Alpha Delta G-BOAD, boasts a unique history. It’s the only British Airways Concorde on display in the Northeast. It holds the record for the fastest transatlantic crossing by a passenger aircraft: 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds from London Heathrow to JFK. This very plane made that journey, a testament to human ingenuity and daring. In 2003, this Concorde made its final journey, not across the ocean, but down the Hudson River. It underwent a major restoration at Weeks Marine in New Jersey. This included a fresh coat of paint, meticulously applied to match the iconic colors and markings that made Concorde a legend. The journey back to the Intrepid was quite a spectacle. The Concorde, weighing 85 tons, was carefully floated on a barge, then hoisted back onto the pier by a 300-foot crane. Tours of the Concorde resumed shortly after. Stepping onto the Intrepid and seeing the Concorde is more than just a museum visit. It’s a glimpse into a bygone era, a reminder of a time when the future seemed to arrive with a sonic boom.
