Curious about a Victorian folly? Today we stand before the Druid’s Judgement Seat. It is found in a leafy area of Killiney.

Let me tell you about the Druid’s Judgement Seat. It is often overlooked. The name “Druid’s Judgement Seat” probably comes from the area’s druidical history. But it is unlikely a druid ever sat here. Most historians believe it is a Victorian folly. Some think it could be genuine.

Regardless it is a genuinely strange monument. It is surrounded by large stones. These are the ruins of three Bronze Age cairns. Stones were taken from these cairns. They were used to construct the Druid’s Judgement Seat. This left true historical monuments without importance. It is thought the cairns were surrounded by a stone circle. This stone circle would have been important to local druids. There are odd rocks strewn around. This could support the idea of a stone circle.

The Druid’s Judgement Seat sits in a secluded copse. It is surrounded by trees. Even the decorated footpath looks like landscaping. It seems to be drifting back to an overgrown state. The Druid’s Judgement Seat is at the far end of the entrance. It provides a great photo opportunity. It is quiet and secretive here.

There is a similar seat called the Brehon’s Chair. It is in Taylors Grange County Dublin. But that chair is now in a gated community. It is not as easy to access.

The Druid’s Judgement Seat might not be featured on many maps. But we have visited the Killiney site many times. We have never met another soul here.

Some say the stones were known as the sun and moon stones. Whatever its origins, the Druid’s Judgement Seat remains an intriguing relic. It connects us to layers of history. It invites contemplation on the mysteries of the past.
