“A fiery halo crowns your lived-in face” the sonnet reads. That’s how poet John Sheahan described Luke Kelly. We stand before one of two statues dedicated to him in Dublin. This one’s a powerful marble bust by Vera Klute. Unveiled in 2019 it captures Luke’s intensity. It’s located near the Royal Canal on Guild Street. This area is where Luke Kelly spent his childhood. His family lived in Sheriff Street nearby.

The statue is more than just a likeness of a famous singer. It’s a tribute to a Dublin icon. Luke Kelly was a founding member of The Dubliners. The band brought traditional Irish music to the world. Their songs became anthems. They continue to be celebrated even today.

Luke’s life wasn’t easy. He worked many jobs. He sold vacuum cleaners. He cleaned windows. He even worked as a hotel cellerman. He found his true calling as a folk singer in Paris. He returned to Dublin in 1962. That’s when he joined The Dubliners. Their success was enormous. Luke’s distinctive voice and fiery red hair made him instantly recognizable.

Sadly Luke’s life was cut short. In 1980 he collapsed on stage. Doctors diagnosed a brain tumor. Despite the illness he continued to perform. He died on January 30 1984. The whole city mourned his loss.

The second Luke Kelly statue stands on South King Street. It’s a bronze sculpture by artist John Coll. This one shows Luke seated playing his banjo. Both statues reflect different aspects of his personality. The bust shows his intense stage presence. The seated figure evokes his warmth and approachability.

This particular statue hasn’t escaped vandalism. It’s been defaced multiple times. The North Wall Community Association is working hard to protect it. They understand how important it is to the people of Dublin. They’re making sure this tribute to a local hero remains intact.

Luke Kelly’s music lives on. His legacy is preserved in his songs and these two enduring statues. He remains one of Ireland’s greatest cultural treasures. His music continues to touch hearts and inspire generations. He’s more than just a musician. Luke Kelly is a symbol of Dublin itself. A symbol of Dublin’s heart and soul.
