Founded by the Marist Brothers in 1954, Marian College stands before you as a testament to educational excellence rooted in faith. Marian College wasn’t always here. Archbishop John Charles McQuaid invited the Marist Brothers to establish a Catholic school in this area. He wanted a counterpoint to the co-educational Sandymount High School which had opened nearby. Co-education, in the Archbishop’s view, was unacceptable. Marian College opened its doors to its first students on September 8th, 1954. They found their classrooms at Riverside House, a beautiful property along the River Dodder. The name “Marian College” holds special significance. It acknowledges the Virgin Mary’s importance in the Marist Brothers’ traditions and recognizes 1954 as a Marian Year celebrated by the Church. The pursuit of excellence, or “Optimum Optare” as their motto states, echoes through the halls of Marian College. The school strives to nurture well-rounded individuals prepared to make a difference in the world.
