The first stone was laid on May 30, 2000. Dr. Satryo Soemantri Brojonegoro officiated the ceremony. He was the Director General of National Education. Dr. H. Rusli Bintang and Prof. Dr. H. M Nasir also attended. Universitas Batam was inaugurated on January 26, 2001. The Minister of National Education, Bapak Dr. A. Yahya Muhaimin, presided over the event.
