Regarding the name, did you know “Isern” means iron? Isernhagen is a municipality northeast of Hanover. It is the wealthiest municipality in Lower Saxony.

The name Isernhagen comes from “Yser” meaning iron. In the Middle Ages, ironstone was common. It was smelted locally. It was used as construction material. “Hagene” means woodlands or farmland fencing. This fencing kept animals away.

Isernhagen has seven districts. They are Niedernhägener Bauerschaft, Kircher Bauerschaft, Farster Bauernschaft, Hohenhorster Bauerschaft, Altwarmbüchen, Neuwarmbüchen and Kirchhorst. Isernhagen is twinned with four cities. These are Peacehaven, Épinay-sous-Sénart, Suchy Las and Tamási.

Isernhagen’s coat of arms has three silver lilies on red. These come from the Barons of Cramm coat of arms. They symbolize the three local congregations of Kirchwarmbüchen. Four horseshoes symbolize the four peasantries. Horse breeding was common there. The silver band represents the river Wietze. It connects all villages. The district of Hannover authorized it in 1987.

You can visit well-preserved half-timbered houses in Isernhagen. House number 72 is one of the oldest. It is in Farster Bauerschaft. It was built in 1595. Its renaissance style includes wood carvings. These carvings show rosettes typical of the period.

Isernhagen borders Burgwedel, Burgdorf, Lehrte, Hannover, Langenhagen, and Wedemark. Isernhagen lies on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The four Bauerschaften are affluent residential areas near Hanover. Many well-preserved half-timbered houses remain. One common type is the Fachhallenhaus.

Altwarmbüchen and Kirchhorst border the Altwarmbüchener Moor. It is about 15 square kilometers. Farmers cut its peat layers for heating. A 1797 document shows Isernhagen had rights to peat cutting. Drainage damaged the moor vegetation. Now, some areas are nature reserves. Most of it is a protected landscape.

Isernhagen was first mentioned in 1322 as “Yserenhaghe”. Bernardus de Yserenhaghe was the first citizen listed. Isernhagen was part of the Grafschaft über dem Moore in the 14th century. It later belonged to the Amtsvogtei Burgwedel.

For better organization, Isernhagen was divided into four Bauerschaften. These are Niedernhägener, Kircher, Farster and Hohenhorster. They form the four old villages of Isernhagen. The exact date of this division is unknown. The Bauerschaften are mentioned in the 15th-century registers.

Altwarmbüchen dates back to 12th-century “Werenboke”. Neuwarmbüchen originated from a single farm. Kirchhorst was formed in 1929. It combined Kirchhorst, Großhorst and Stelle. Until the 19th century, these villages were small. Residents cut peat for sale in Hanover.

Until the Reformation, Isernhagen belonged to the Bishopric of Hildesheim. The St. Marien Church was built around 1450. Duke Ernst the Confessor introduced the Reformation in 1527. The first Lutheran pastor arrived in 1534.

Farmers practiced various trades. They gained wealth through hop and horse trade. This was especially true in the 16th and 17th centuries. The characteristic timber-framed houses date from this time. They feature ornate, projecting gables.

While Germany’s population grew in the 19th century, Isernhagen’s remained constant. In 1821, there were only 173 more residents than in 1786. After World War II, many refugees arrived. The population rose significantly.

The railway connection between Hannover and Celle was completed in 1938. Also in 1937-1938, Altwarmbüchen gained access to the Cologne-Hannover-Berlin highway.

In 1974, Altwarmbüchen, Kirchhorst, and Neuwarmbüchen merged. They formed the new municipality of Warmbüchen. In 1975, it was renamed Isernhagen.

Today, Isernhagen is known for its blend of history and affluence. Its well-preserved buildings and community spirit make it a unique place. From its iron-rich beginnings to its modern amenities, Isernhagen offers a rich experience.
