Lost in the sprawling urban landscape of Berlin lies a hidden gem. This is Gutspark Falkenberg a tranquil oasis. It boasts a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Imagine a time when this area was a manor house surrounded by lush gardens. The Gutspark Falkenberg has witnessed centuries of transformation. From a Baroque garden around 1800 to a landscape garden around 1870. The park changed significantly. Then complete renewal and official opening happened in 2005.

The Humboldt family owned the Gutspark until the mid-20th century. A fascinating detail is that parts of the estate were almost used for sewage farms. Thankfully Berlin bought the Gut Falkenberg from the Alvensleben family in 1875. This prevented the destruction of this valuable green space. The Berliner Verwaltung showed little interest in preserving the buildings or the former Baroque pleasure garden. The manor house and outbuildings fell into disrepair. The park became overgrown. In 1962 they demolished the first buildings because they were dilapidated.

A design competition in 1999 revitalized the Gutspark. Atelier Loidl Berlin won the competition. Their plan transformed the neglected area into a public park. This involved demolishing remaining buildings. They also enhanced the old orchard with new plantings. The renovation cost 576000 Euros. Funding came from various sources including EU grants and local investments. The Alpina company carried out the work.

Today the Gutspark Falkenberg is a beautiful place. A small pond forms the heart of the park. It has a romantic path around it. The pond is at risk of drying up. Lichtenberg’s district office plans to spend 200000 Euros for its renovation. Large meadows and old trees welcome visitors. Newly planted rhododendrons add color. There are also around 10000 crocuses and other wild plants. The park also has paved paths rustic stairs and ramp. Klinker walls define the landscape’s slopes.

Near a commemorative plaque is a stone. It bears the inscription “Adolfs Ruh 1880”. The Gutspark Falkenberg serves as the gateway to the Regionalpark Barnimer Feldmark. This larger recreational area is constantly expanding beyond Berlin’s city limits. The Stegeweg leads to the park. It passes meadows old fruit trees and aurochs grazing on pastures. This park is more than just a green space. It’s a place that tells a story. A story of history transformation and community. It’s a place worth exploring. So take your time and soak in the beauty and history of Gutspark Falkenberg.
