Isn’t it intriguing how a simple roadside motel can have such a rich history? Here at the Econo Lodge in Houston, we’re part of a story that began long before this building even existed.
Econo Lodge started as Econo-Travel in 1969. Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr. founded it in Norfolk Virginia. They were joined by Lloyd Tarbutton. He found investors and did market research.
Back then rooms were very affordable. A single room cost just $7. Double rooms were $9. Four people could stay for only $11. Imagine traveling back in time to those prices.
The first Econo-Travel was built for $275000. It is still operating today at 865 North Military Highway in Norfolk. The chain’s early mascot was “Sandy”. She was a girl in a Scotch skirt.
Lloyd Tarbutton sold the chain in 1983. It had grown to 306 locations. The sale price was $836 million. Tarbutton began changing the name to Econo Lodge in the late 1970s.
The brand experienced changes in ownership. Investor Paul Wallace eventually acquired it. He refurbished the hotels and improved relations with franchisees. In 1990 he sold it to Choice Hotels International.
Econo Lodge is now one of Choice Hotels’ larger subsidiaries. It is considered more upscale than its sister brand Rodeway Inn. As of December 31 2022 there were 759 Econo Lodge hotels open. These hotels had 44697 rooms.
