\u5186\u878d\u5bfa is a common name for Buddhist temples across Japan.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine the Konin era during the Heian period. It was a time of emperors and elegant court life. That is when Yakujusan Enmeiji Temple was founded. Over the centuries it grew. Its present size was reached during the Edo period.
Now picture this ancient maple tree. It is no ordinary tree. Locals call it the Evening Sun Maple. This maple is over 1000 years old. It is designated a natural monument of Osaka Prefecture.
Legend says that Kobo Daishi himself enshrined Jizo Bodhisattva here. He did so during his pilgrimage. Centuries later a priest named Jogon was born here. Jogon revived the temple as Yakushuzan Enmeiji.
Master Jogon gained the trust of Lord Tsunayoshi. Lord Tsunayoshi was the fifth shogun. Jogon established Reiun-ji Temple in Yushima Edo. Throughout his life Jogon promoted Buddhism. He respected the precepts. Jogon also lived a life of poverty.
\u5186\u878d\u5bfa houses national treasures. Two stand out. They are the Kabutsu Tennai-in Mandala and the Seiryoji-style Standing Statue of Shakyamuni Nyorai.
The Yusho Maple is also special. It is said that Kobo Daishi planted it by hand. It is around 1000 years old. Its name comes from its beauty against the sunset. This is best seen in late autumn. Many pilgrims visit during this season from late October to late November.
Visiting \u5186\u878d\u5bfa provides a peaceful escape. The average visit takes about 40 minutes. The temple is open from 9 am to 5 pm. But note that it closes during bad weather.
