How much did someone pay for this massive stadium? In 1913, the Gaelic Athletic Association, or GAA, became the sole owner of the Jones’ Road sports ground. They bought the property for a mere $4,633.54 from Frank Dineen. The sports ground was renamed Croke Park, in honor of Archbishop Thomas Croke. He was one of the GAA’s first patrons. Today, Croke Park stands as the grand home of the Gaelic Athletic Association. It’s the heart of Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie. Since 1884, Croke Park, affectionately known as Croker to Dubliners, has been the primary host for Gaelic games. This includes the electrifying annual All-Ireland finals in football and hurling.

Croke Park has witnessed incredible moments throughout history. During the Irish War of Independence, a tragic event known as Bloody Sunday unfolded here. On November 21, 1920, British forces opened fire on the crowd during a football match. This resulted in the deaths of 14 people. The Hogan Stand, a prominent feature of the stadium, was named in memory of Michael Hogan, the Tipperary team captain who tragically lost his life that day. Croke Park isn’t just about sports. It’s a cultural hub that has welcomed international music stars. U2, Coldplay, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, One Direction, The Police, and Take That have all graced the stage here. The stadium even hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Special Olympics in 2003.

Even Pope Benedict XVI made an appearance, albeit via video link, during the closing ceremony of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in 2012. Today, Croke Park stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Irish sport, culture, and history. It’s a place where legends are made, memories are created, and the echoes of the past mingle with the cheers of the present.
