“Berusaha Tanpa Jemu” or “Aspire Tirelessly” is the motto of Chee Wan San Temple. This large Buddhist temple complex offers a peaceful escape. It sits just off Jalan Sungai Besi in Kuala Lumpur. Let’s explore its history and beauty together.
Chee Wan San Temple was established in 1922. Some sources say 1927. It is not easily visible from the main road. Look for a yellow sign to guide you. Passing under the yellow entrance gate leads you into the compound.
Notice the flight of concrete steps. They lead to a pavilion. Here, you will find a large golden Avalokitesvara statue. It has multiple arms and stands about 4 meters tall. This statue is truly impressive.
The main temple has two large halls. Covered walkways link them around a central courtyard. Side buildings complete the complex. The entrance is guarded by four large stone statues. These are carved with fine detail.
Step inside the largest prayer hall. You will see several statues. Three gold Buddhas stand behind glass on the main altar. The central courtyard offers a pleasant atmosphere. An ornate bronze urn sits here. Tables are provided for offerings. Devotees leave candles joss sticks oranges and lucky bamboo.
To one side you will spot a black marble wall. It is inscribed with the names of devotees. A construction plan shows planned extensions. Chee Wan San Temple continues to evolve.
Visitors are welcome from 7.30 am to 5 pm. Entrance to the Chee Wan San Temple is free. Donations are appreciated. Vegetarian food is served on the 1st and 15th days of each lunar month. Many say it is delicious.
The main deity is the statue of Avalokitesvara. It is also known as Guan Yin. Devotees celebrate Guan Yin’s birthday. It falls on the 19th day of the 2nd lunar month. Other celebrations include Vesak Day and the Ullambana Festival.
