This memorial commemorates the audacious proclamation read aloud by Pádraig Pearse at Nelson’s Column in 1916, sparking the Easter Rising. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic, modeled on Robert Emmet’s 1803 proclamation, declared Ireland’s independence. The seven leaders of the rising, including Pearse and Connolly, signed this revolutionary document at the GPO. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was remarkably progressive for its time. It envisioned a republic in an era of emperors and kings. It promised voting rights for women, a right then enjoyed by few in Europe. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic, however, contained a controversial clause. It referenced “gallant allies in Europe,” alluding to Germany, who had supplied arms to the rebels. This alliance with Germany, Britain’s enemy in World War I, was viewed as treason. It led to the execution of the Proclamation’s signatories. These executions, though meant to quell rebellion, fueled sympathy for the cause of an Irish Republic. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic’s authorship remains uncertain, though Pearse, with Connolly’s input, is generally credited. While Pearse was the “commander-in-chief,” some rebels later claimed Connolly was the more effective leader. Original copies of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic are now highly valuable. One sold for over €700,000 in 2006. Sean T O’Kelly’s signed copy is on display at Leinster House. Other copies can be seen at the GPO, the National Museum of Ireland, Trinity College, and even internationally. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic remains a cornerstone of Irish history. Its words resonate at this very memorial. It reminds us of the courageous individuals who dared to envision, and fight for, a free Ireland.
