South Bay Christian Alliance is the formal name of the church. It reflects their dedication to the South Bay region of San Diego. This is where they focus their efforts to serve and uplift. The story of Agape Chinese Alliance Church offers a different perspective. It highlights the diverse expressions of faith within the Christian community. Agape Church, part of the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination, started in 1986. It served the growing Chinese immigrant and student population in San Diego.
Rev. and Mrs. Gerald Chao founded Agape with support from Balboa Alliance Church. Cantonese worship, Bible study and outreach grew the church. Many found Christ and were baptized.
In 1997 Rev. and Mrs. Patrick Chow reshaped Agape. They focused on living out the Great Commandments found in Matthew 22:37-40 and 28:19-20. Agape Chinese Alliance Church officially incorporated in July 1998.
The church relocated in 2000 near Asian businesses and restaurants. They expanded outreach with parent education, health fairs and language classes. Small groups and Bible studies fostered growth in all ministries.
Agape welcomed its first American-born English pastor James Chuang in 2005. Rev. and Mrs. Jack To continued the ministry in 2007. They partnered with Enoch Center to reach the Chinese community.
In 2011 Agape moved to a larger facility. The church acquired its current premise in 2016. Rev. Jack To’s passing in the same year brought uncertainty. But the leaders and members remained faithful.
Rev. and Mrs. Jonathan Lam joined Agape in 2020 as Lead Pastor. Pastor Joshua Cheng serves the English congregations since 2021. Agape continues to trust in God as the Lord of the church.
Agape’s core values revolve around the Great Commandments and the Great Commission. They express love for God through worship and apply His word in small groups.
Agape actively reaches out to the San Diego community. They care for needs and share the good news of Jesus Christ. The church also supports global missions through prayer and financial contributions.
Rev. Jonathan Lam envisions Agape as a church after God’s own heart. He aims to build a sustainable leadership. Pastor Xristian Escala joined Agape in 2025. He desires that all people know God’s immense love.
