Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what secrets it holds? Well, the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is here to guide you through the cosmos, and with it, through a fascinating history. This captivating place is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, a Scottish astronomer and former governor of New South Wales who lived in the 19th century. He established the first significant observatory in Australia at Parramatta, creating a legacy of stargazing in the land Down Under. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, founded in 1978 in Brisbane’s beautiful Botanic Gardens on Mount Coot-tha, stands as a lasting tribute to his passion.

The planetarium boasts a 12.5-meter Cosmic Skydome, offering a breathtaking immersive experience while you can explore space and astronomy. Inside the dome, you can see a 1/48-scale replica of the iconic Saturn V rocket, a symbol of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Look around and you’ll find a replica of Neil Armstrong’s space suit – a reminder of the courage and determination of humanity’s first steps on the moon. The displays also include an impressive collection of meteorites and models of spacecraft, showcasing the incredible advancements in space exploration. From its opening in 1978, the planetarium was home to a Zeiss star projector, but in 2010, it was replaced with a new digital projection system. The original Zeiss projector is now on display in the foyer, a silent witness to the planetarium’s evolution.

The planetarium offers over 1,300 regular shows a year for the public and school groups. It’s also home to an observatory with a permanently mounted Zeiss refractor telescope and a Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Through these telescopes, you can gaze at the celestial wonders that captivated Sir Thomas Brisbane so long ago. Imagine being able to explore the cosmos in this place, where your understanding of the universe unfolds through immersive displays, interactive exhibits, and the wonder of gazing through powerful telescopes.
