Whispers of gratitude once filled the air around Chiesa parrocchiale di San Carlo Borromeo. This neoclassical masterpiece stands as a testament to Milan’s resilience. It was built in the heart of Milan, along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. Chiesa parrocchiale di San Carlo Borromeo arose from the ashes of a former church, Santa Maria dei Servi. This older church, belonging to the Servite Order, was demolished in the 19th century as Milan underwent a dramatic urban transformation. The city sought to create a grand boulevard connecting the Duomo to Piazza San Babila. This ambitious project led to the decision to replace the old church with a larger, more imposing structure. The new church would be dedicated to a beloved figure in Milanese history, Archbishop Saint Charles Borromeo. The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Carlo Borromeo was thus conceived as a symbol of gratitude for the end of a devastating cholera epidemic. The construction began in 1839, based on the designs of Milanese architect Carlo Amati. The church’s design drew inspiration from the grandeur of the Pantheon in Rome, evident in its circular form and imposing dome. The facade is graced by 36 monolithic granite columns from Baveno. These columns form a striking colonnade around the piazza. The church was finally inaugurated in 1847. Inside, the grand circular hall is breathtaking. The dome spans an impressive 32.2 meters in diameter. Red granite columns encircle the space. Chapels are nestled within the surrounding walls, one preserving the legacy of Santa Maria dei Servi with its statue of the Madonna of the Sorrows. Another chapel honors the blessed Giovanni Angelo Porro. Above the main altar, a wooden crucifix by Pompeo Marchesi, a student of Antonio Canova, commands attention. Marchesi also crafted the marble relief depicting San Carlo Borromeo giving communion to San Luigi Gonzaga. Hidden within the adjacent convent are altarpieces from the old church. These include “Orazione nell’orto” by Giovan Paolo Lomazzo and “Assunta” by Bernardo Zenale. Chiesa parrocchiale di San Carlo Borromeo stands not only as a tribute to a revered saint, but as a beacon of hope and resilience in the heart of Milan.
