A somber grey stone stands before us. This is the Günter Litfin Stone. It marks a tragic moment in Berlin’s history. A moment etched in the city’s soul.

The Günter Litfin Stone commemorates Günter Litfin. He was the first person shot dead trying to escape across the Berlin Wall. This memorial isn’t just a stone. It’s a powerful symbol of the Wall’s brutality. It reminds us of the human cost of division.

Günter Litfin was a tailor. He lived in East Berlin but worked in West Berlin. He was a Grenzgänger a cross-border commuter. When the Wall went up he found an apartment in West Berlin. He was in the process of moving. He didn’t register his new address though. He wanted to keep visiting his family in the East. But then the Wall sealed his fate.

On August 24 1961 Günter Litfin tried to escape. He swam across the Spree River. East German border guards spotted him. They ordered him to stop. He didn’t. He was shot and killed. His body was recovered hours later.

The Günter Litfin Stone originally stood near Humboldthafen. Construction moved it. It now resides on Invalidenstrasse near Sandkrugbrücke. The inscription reads Günter Litfin 19 January 1937 to 24 August 1961. It remembers him and all the Wall’s victims.

The Günter Litfin Stone is more than a memorial. It’s a testament to the courage of those who dared to flee. It’s a reminder of the Wall’s inhumanity. It is a symbol of hope in the face of despair. This simple stone embodies the profound suffering of a divided city. Let us never forget Günter Litfin and the countless others who perished at the Wall.
