Fifty centimeters thick concrete. That’s what separated us from the outside world. This is the SeMA Bunker.

In 2005 during the construction of a bus station an amazing discovery was made. A forgotten underground bunker lay hidden beneath Yeouido. Nobody knew it existed. Not even the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s archives held any record. For ten years it sat unused. Then in 2016 after asbestos removal and structural repairs it opened its doors. It’s now an art gallery a testament to a time when war loomed large.

Imagine President Park Chung-hee in his bunker office. A leopard-print sofa a private bathroom a shower. Luxury in the face of potential annihilation. The bunker’s existence is linked to heightened inter-Korean tensions. The construction started sometime between late 1976 and early 1977. This is suggested by aerial photographs. The location itself under the inspection platform for ROK Armed Forces Day. It was designed as a wartime shelter.

The SeMA Bunker is more than just concrete and history. It is a place of art and reflection. A site where the past speaks powerfully to the present. A space that shows how quickly the past can be forgotten and how unexpected rediscoveries can reshape our understanding. It’s a place of awe. A massive space over ten meters wide and fifty meters long.

The SeMA Bunker is a unique historical artifact. It’s been transformed into a cultural facility. It’s open for the public to experience. Here we see the blending of art and history. A tangible link to a time of fear. A place to think about the past. And maybe learn from its lessons. The SeMA Bunker. A secret revealed a history remembered. A future imagined.
