Did you know Queen Elizabeth II herself once stayed here? Welcome to Villa Lemm a magnificent English country house style villa nestled in Berlin’s Gatow district. Built between 1907 and 1908 for shoe polish magnate Otto Lemm it’s a true testament to the elegance of early 20th century architecture. The villa’s symmetrical facade boasts a charming veranda and beautifully designed bay windows. Its gardens a breathtaking blend of English landscape and Italianate terraces were redesigned in 1912-13 incorporating a stunning pool a unique bowling alley and even a tennis court. Imagine the lavish parties hosted here.

After Otto Lemm’s unexpected death in 1920 the villa passed to Doctor Janos Plesch a renowned physician. Plesch transformed Villa Lemm into a vibrant hub for Berlin’s artistic and scientific elite. Albert Einstein a frequent visitor often joined Plesch for musical evenings in the garden pavilions. This was truly a place of intellectual and artistic exchange a meeting point for some of history’s greatest minds. Sadly Plesch was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933. He never saw his beloved Villa Lemm again.

The villa survived World War II unscathed. It later became the residence of the British sector commander during the Cold War. Imagine the weight of history held within these walls. The presence of British forces necessitated significant renovations and security upgrades. For decades Villa Lemm served as the official residence. It witnessed countless high-profile visits including multiple stays by Queen Elizabeth II herself. Security was incredibly tight. The waterfront was often patrolled by special forces boats. Sections of the Havel River were even closed to shipping during these important visits.

After German reunification the villa stood empty for a time. There was even talk of it becoming the Chancellor’s residence. Security concerns however ultimately dashed those plans. Finally in 1995 it was purchased by entrepreneur Hartwig Piepenbrock. He lovingly restored the Villa and its gardens returning it to its former glory. Today Villa Lemm stands as a symbol of Berlin’s rich and complex history. A place that has witnessed the rise and fall of empires and the ebb and flow of artistic and intellectual movements. It is a testament to resilience and a beautiful reminder of a bygone era.
