How many buildings do you know that have been reborn? REXKL is one such place. It stands here as a testament to Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant cultural scene. REXKL wasn’t always this trendy hub. Once, it was the iconic Rex Cinema. It was a place where people escaped into the magic of movies back in the 1950s.
But the original cinema met a tragic end. A fire in 1972 left it in ruins. It was rebuilt as a grand single-screen cinema with a thousand seats. For years, it entertained moviegoers. But as time passed, the cinema closed and the building fell into disrepair.
Fast forward to 2019. REXKL emerged from the ashes. It transformed into a creative space. This transformation breathed new life into the oldest part of Kuala Lumpur in Chinatown.
REXKL is now a space for events. It hosts theatre, exhibitions, and performances. You can find screenings, library facilities and workshops here. Retail outlets and food and beverage vendors also call REXKL home.
The location of REXKL is very central. It is located on Jalan Sultan in City Centre. This makes it easy to reach. It is near the Petaling Street Market and Central Market.
Getting here is convenient. The Pudu Sentral bus station is nearby. You can also use the covered walkway from the Plaza Rakyat LRT Station. Or you can walk from the LRT or MRT stations at Pasar Seni.
Once you step inside REXKL, you will find a mix of businesses. The AirAsia Foundation store offers handcrafted items from across Asean. You can find anything from handbags to bamboo bicycles. You can grab a coffee and browse the unique shops. There is a barber shop, plant store and bookstore.
The building retains its original structure. A new upper floor now serves as an exhibition and performance space. REXKL hosts many events, including the Made-In-Malaysia event.
REXKL also carries a poignant history. It was one of the locations affected by the 13 May Incident in 1969. Racial riots broke out during a movie screening. The event left a lasting impact on many. Today, REXKL stands as a symbol of resilience. It demonstrates how a place can evolve. It can transform from a site of tragedy into a space of creativity and community.
So, take a look around. Enjoy the mix of old and new at REXKL. It is a place where history, culture, and creativity converge. It stands as a reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s dynamic spirit.
