Is this the place that started in a garage? Highway Christian Community, right here in Pinetown, actually began its journey in a humble garage in Westville back in 1988. Imagine that! A small group of around 50 people, drawn together by their faith, sowed the seeds for what has become a flourishing spiritual community. Highway Christian Community isn’t just a church; it’s a testament to the power of faith and the unwavering spirit of its people. Its roots are deeply entwined with the Video Churches of Hatfield Christian Church in Pretoria. Over the years, Highway Christian Community has seen a tapestry of leaders who have guided its congregation. It all began with Ps Ed Roebert, followed by Herman and Joy Basson in 1988. Even when tragedy struck in 1992, the church persevered. Greg and Michelle stepped forward to lead, ushering in a period of growth and expansion. Under Greg Haswell’s leadership, the community extended its reach by launching the Highway radio station (101.5 FM). In 1996, Steve and Janet Wheeler came to the forefront. They have been the guiding lights of Highway Christian Community since Greg Haswell’s move to the USA in 1999. The Wheelers, originally from Springs, had a strong connection to the church, having studied at Hatfield Bible College under Ps. Ed Roebert. Highway Christian Community’s embrace of the Message of Grace is a pivotal chapter in its story. Influenced by the teachings of figures like Rob Rufus, Joseph Prince, and Andrew Womack, the church experienced a profound shift in 2008. Today, Highway Christian Community stands as a beacon of faith. It is a place where the message of grace continues to resonate, nurturing the spiritual growth of its community.
