Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church

In 1890, a beautiful church rose in Coronado, a testament to love and faith. This was Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. It stands as a beacon of hope for generations. Isabella Graham Babcock commissioned it in memory of her parents, John and Susan Graham. The church’s architect, James W. Reid, also designed the Hotel del Coronado. This connection adds a touch of historical charm to Graham Memorial. The church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. It hosted weekly worship services and nurtured countless relationships. This provided a home for the church’s ministers, starting with Reverend Notley Hammock. Later, the historic Charles T. Hinde property was acquired, becoming the Kirk House. This expansion provided much-needed space for offices, meeting rooms, and even a preschool. Over the years, Graham Memorial has undergone several renovations. One notable restoration involved a controversial paint job. The original white was replaced with warm golds, muted greens, and soft whites. This sparked debate but ultimately enhanced the church’s beauty. Graham Memorial’s stained-glass windows are a particular treasure. These Victorian-era windows, with their intricate designs, bathe the sanctuary in colorful light. Their careful maintenance ensures they continue to inspire awe.
