Can you imagine crossing the Leine River on a simple wooden ferry? For centuries, that was the only way to travel between Stöcken in Hanover and Letter in Seelze. Today, we stand before the Klappenburgbrücke, a modern marvel compared to its humble predecessor. The Klappenburgbrücke gracefully spans the Leine, connecting these two communities. Its history reflects the growth and progress of the area. Let’s journey back to 1752. A small ferry operated at the edge of Stöcken, carrying people and goods across the river. This ferry is even marked on a 1781 map of the Electorate of Hanover. By the 1930s, the ferry couldn’t handle the increasing traffic. In 1936, a simple wooden bridge replaced the ferry, built for 75,000 Reichsmark. This first Klappenburgbrücke, an extension of “Auf der Klappenburg” street, provided a much-needed improvement. However, the road leading to Letter remained a basic dirt path, improved only with slag. As traffic continued to increase, the route became a district road in 1966 and a state road in 1968. The wooden Klappenburgbrücke proved inadequate. In 1967, a temporary steel truss bridge took its place. Finally, in 1984, the current Klappenburgbrücke was constructed, a sleek prestressed concrete structure that efficiently serves the modern needs of the community. But the Klappenburgbrücke holds more than just transportation history. In 2018, during a period of severe drought, the Leine’s water level dropped dramatically. This revealed a surprising discovery beneath the Klappenburgbrücke: several gravestones, partially submerged and hidden from view under normal conditions. One stone commemorated a mother who passed away in 1904. The origin of these gravestones and how they ended up beneath the bridge remains a mystery, adding a touch of intrigue to this modern landmark. The Klappenburgbrücke stands as a testament to progress, connecting communities and carrying the weight of history, both known and unknown.
