William Smith O’Brien was captured and sentenced to a traitor’s death. Public outcry, though, led to his sentence being commuted to transportation to Tasmania. He spent five years in exile before being pardoned and allowed to return to Ireland. Even though he never held political office again, his impact on Irish nationalism remained.
