“Now’s here’s a proof of Irish sense, Here Irish wit is seen, When nothing’s left that’s worth defence, We build a Magazine.” This satirical verse, penned by the renowned Jonathan Swift, pokes fun at the seemingly paradoxical decision to construct the Magazine Fort amidst widespread poverty in 18th-century Dublin. The Magazine Fort, a sturdy bastion fort nestled within the vast expanse of Phoenix Park, stands as a testament to Ireland’s turbulent past and strategic importance. Erected in 1735 on the remnants of Phoenix Lodge, its main purpose was to safeguard the British government’s precious gunpowder and ammunition. The fort, with its four robust demi-bastions, thick walls, and encircling dry moat, exudes an aura of impregnability. However, despite its imposing facade, the Magazine Fort has witnessed its fair share of daring raids. On Easter Monday 1916, during the fervor of the Easter Rising, young members of Fianna Éireann, seeking to secure arms, attempted to obliterate the fort. Their audacious plan involved setting explosives, but fate intervened as the fuses, much to their dismay, fizzled out before reaching the ammunition. This stroke of luck saved the Magazine Fort from significant destruction.
