Feel the cool water. This is Mary’s Spring. Legend whispers of Mary herself drinking here. Imagine the Virgin Mary pausing at this very spot. She journeyed to Ein Kerem a city of Juda. She visited Elizabeth John the Baptist’s mother. This spring wasn’t just a random stop. It was the heart of an ancient village. Ein Kerem’s name itself means ‘spring of the vineyard’. This spring sustained life for thousands of years. From the Bronze Age onward its waters quenched the thirst of generations. A remarkable 30-meter rock-hewn tunnel was carved during the Second Temple period. Its purpose was to boost the spring’s water flow.

Mary’s Spring is more than just a source of water. It is sacred to Christians. They believe Mary drank from these waters. Pilgrims filled bottles with its water. They carried it home as holy souvenirs. In the latter half of the 19th century a mosque was built atop the spring. Its tower stands as a testament to the spring’s enduring significance. The structure served both as a place of worship and a school. The mosque’s presence beautifully reflects the layered history of this place. The Palestine Exploration Fund’s 1881 report describes the spring’s water. It stated the water flowed from a spout into a trough.

Sadly the water’s purity is compromised today. It’s no longer safe to drink. Yet its historical and spiritual significance remains powerful. The spring’s location within a valley south of Ein Kerem makes it a place of peace. Stand here. Imagine the past unfolding before you. Hear the echoes of history. The murmur of prayers. The joyful shouts of pilgrims. Feel the cool air of the past envelop you. Mary’s Spring isn’t just a spring. It’s a living testament to faith history and the enduring human need for refreshment both physical and spiritual.
