In 1909, a small group met at Hope Chapel in Cypress Park. They were frustrated. They lacked basic amenities like gas, streetlights, and fire protection. Cypress Park, nestled between the Los Angeles River and the Arroyo Seco, was just 2.5 miles from City Hall. Yet, it felt worlds away in terms of city services. This meeting marked the birth of the Cypress Park Improvement Association. Their goal was simple: bring Cypress Park up to par with the rest of Los Angeles. The residents wanted their streets properly named and marked. They dreamt of a grand boulevard along Cypress Avenue. They yearned for a park and a public school. The Los Angeles Times in 1910 described the association as “thriving and enthusiastic.” Their efforts were a testament to the growing pains of a young neighborhood. Cypress Park’s history stretches back to 1784. It began as Rancho San Rafael. After the Mexican-American War, it was subdivided and became one of the first communities in the Arroyo Seco area. It even predates Highland Park by three years. Today, Cypress Park is home to over 10,000 residents. It boasts the Rio de Los Angeles State Park and access to the Los Angeles River Bike Path. The Huron Substation, a historic landmark, stands as a reminder of the Yellow Car railway system that once served the area. The neighborhood has even become a popular filming location. Scenes from movies like “The Fast and the Furious” and “Catwoman” were filmed at the Huron Substation. Cypress Park is a neighborhood of contrasts. It is a place where history intertwines with modern development, where community activism meets artistic expression. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of a neighborhood striving to balance its past with its future.
