The cornerstone for Hyde Park’s new Catholic church was laid on July 4 1880. This was the Sunday following June 30 the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Most Precious Blood Church was born from this devotion. Before 1853 Catholics in the area belonged to Saints Peter and Paul Parish in South Boston. Later Saint Gregory Parish in Dorchester covered the area. Masses were held in private homes. Sometimes Mass was celebrated in a music hall in Everett now Logan Square. In 1868 Hyde Park became a town. A church lot was bought on Webster Street. A parish was created in 1870. Reverend William J Corcoran became pastor. He oversaw the building of the Church of the Epiphany. Sadly it burned down on January 2 1875. A new lot was purchased at Maple and Oak Streets. Reverend Richard J Barry became pastor in February 1880. He built the Most Precious Blood Church. Construction finished in 1885. The dedication was September 13 1885. The Most Precious Blood Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Its history reflects the growth of the Catholic community in Hyde Park. The church’s parishioners have shown unwavering dedication. They’ve served God and neighbor through groups like the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. The Haitian Prayer Group is a more recent addition. Former pastors are remembered in the church’s beautiful windows. The Most Precious Blood Church’s legacy extends beyond its walls. Its “satellite” schoolhouses led to the creation of St Anne Parish in 1918 and St Pius X in 1954. Today the Most Precious Blood Church continues its mission. It works with St Anne and St Pius X as part of the Catholic Parishes of the Blue Hills. The church continues to serve Hyde Park and spread the Good News. The Most Precious Blood Church remains a vital part of the community. It’s a place of worship and fellowship for generations. Its story is one of faith resilience and enduring community spirit. This is the Most Precious Blood Church a place of deep historical significance and spiritual richness.
