Fancy a challenge? Phutuq K’usi is calling.

Welcome to Phutuq K’usi. It is also known as Putucusi. This round-shaped mountain stands tall. It is located on the northeast side of the Urubamba River. Machu Picchu is on the opposite side. Phutuq K’usi reaches about 8400 feet above sea level. The views from the top are truly epic. You will see Machu Picchu. You will also see the Urubamba River valley.

Locals call Phutuq K’usi a holy mountain. They consider it an apu. Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu are also apus. The Quechua people hold these mountains sacred.

The name Phutuq K’usi has an interesting origin. In Quechua, “phutu” means bud. “K’usi” refers to a type of zucchini. So, Phutuq K’usi translates to “budding zucchini”. Some guides call it “Happy Mountain.” “Kusi” means happy. “Putuq” can mean trapezoid. The mountain’s shape might explain this name.

Climbing Phutuq K’usi is an adventure. The trek takes about 1.5 hours. You will climb roughly 1700 wood and rock steps. The entrance to the trail is free. Find it ten minutes west of Aguas Calientes. Follow the train tracks along the Urubamba River.

The first part of the climb is through the jungle. Expect vertical wooden ladders. The largest ladder stretches over 100 feet. The second half offers stunning views. See Aguas Calientes and the Urubamba River valley. The trail zigzags up the eastern face of Phutuq K’usi.

You will see native plants along the way. There are pisonayes and q’eofias. Alisos and puya palm trees are also present. Keep an eye out for ferns. Over 90 species of orchids thrive here.

Be warned the trail to Phutuq K’usi is challenging. It involves scaling near-vertical ladders. The slopes are steep. This trail is not well-maintained. Rain can wash it out. Start at a stairway west of Aguas Calientes. This hike is best for those in good shape.

Phutuq K’usi offers a free alternative to Machu Picchu. The views of the famous ruins are spectacular. Phutuq K’usi is the guardian of Machu Picchu. It is a happy mountain offering incredible vistas.

Sadly, access to the trail has been restricted. It is forbidden due to a lack of upkeep. The ladders are destroyed. Climbing is dangerous without gear. Rangers monitor the area. They prevent unauthorized access. They are there to avoid accidents.

Despite these challenges, the spirit of Phutuq K’usi remains. It is a testament to the natural beauty. It also shows the rich history surrounding Machu Picchu. While the climb may be restricted, remember its significance. It is a budding zucchini. It is a happy mountain. It is a guardian watching over Machu Picchu.
