Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at St Mary’s RC Church in Glasgow you can. This isn’t just any church. St Mary’s is the second oldest Catholic Church in Glasgow a testament to faith resilience and the unwavering spirit of its congregation. Completed in 1842 it stands as a proud symbol of a community’s growth.

Think of the sheer scale of construction. Built on a clayfield amidst several brickworks locals quipped it wasn’t built on rock. The irony isn’t lost on us. This building has weathered storms both literal and figurative. Imagine the bustling activity during its construction. The sounds of hammers the chants of workers the dreams of a community finding a spiritual home.

The architects Goldie and Child designed a masterpiece. The classical facade with its projecting porch and large pediment is awe-inspiring. Look closely at the sculptured winged figures holding a gilded cross. They are a symbol of hope and faith. St Mary’s is more than just stone and mortar.

Beneath the church lies a crypt a solemn resting place. Here lie the remains of two bishops and twelve priests five of whom succumbed to a typhus epidemic in 1847. Their sacrifice their dedication their faith are palpable. This crypt speaks volumes about the hardships faced by the early congregation. It’s a poignant reminder of lives lived and faith tested.

The original churchyard now mostly gone was once a place of quiet reflection. In 1883 a daring theft occurred. Andrew Christie stole half a ton of iron railings. He was apprehended and the railings recovered. This incident though seemingly minor highlights the church’s place in the community and its vulnerability to the outside world.

Today a large headstone remains. It stands as a silent sentinel marking the site of private burials clergy paupers and children from the Orphan House. Most remains were relocated to make way for development. This act though necessary leaves a feeling of lingering loss.

The story of St Mary’s RC Church is a living tapestry. It’s woven with threads of faith community loss and resilience. Standing before its walls you feel the pulse of history a community’s heartbeat echoing through the centuries. Take a moment. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Feel the presence of faith.
