High on Seefin hill a stone giant sleeps. This is Seefin Passage Tomb. For over 5300 years it has stood sentinel. Witness to the ebb and flow of time. A silent guardian of the Wicklow Mountains.

Seefin Passage Tomb is more than just stones. It’s a National Monument. It’s a passage grave. Built around 3300 BC during Ireland’s Neolithic period. It’s located atop Seefin in the Wicklow Mountains. It’s near Kilbride Army Camp. Other cairns sit on nearby Seefingan and Seahan mountains.

In 1931 R A Stewart Macalister excavated Seefin. He found nothing. No artifacts. No human remains. This mystery deepens Seefin’s allure. Did someone remove the remains? Was it never a burial site? Was it something else entirely?

Seefin is a remarkable structure. It’s a stone cairn 24 meters in diameter. It’s 3 meters high. Large kerb stones form its base. A 7-meter passage opens into a chamber. This chamber has five compartments. Lozenge shapes and carved lines decorate its stones. Quartz adds to its mystique.

Legend weaves a different story. Seefin means ‘Seat of Fionn’. Fionn Mac Cumhaill the legendary hero from Irish mythology. Folklore says the Fianna hunted in Glenasmole Valley. Seefin overlooks this valley. Passage tombs like Seefin are seen as entry points to the Otherworld. A place where myth and reality intertwine.

Today Seefin is a place of wonder. It’s a challenging hike to reach. The internal access is restricted. Yet standing before it you feel the weight of history. The whispers of the past. The magic of a place untouched by time. A place where the spirit of Ireland sleeps on.
