Benitake Benzaiten stands as a shrine deeply connected to Chiba Tsunetane. It is a place where the past whispers secrets of prosperity and divine dreams.
Legend says that Tsunetane, a figure of influence in Chiba’s history, fervently prayed for the well-being and success of his descendants. During this time the goddess Benzaiten appeared to him in a dream. Inspired by this divine encounter, Tsunetane relocated a Benzaiten shrine from Kamakura to this very location.
But why here? This area was once a vital spring. It fed the Yoshikawa River, a river that nourished the Chiba clan’s lands. The presence of Benzaiten, not only a deity of wealth but also of water, highlights the deep-seated hopes of Tsunetane for his estate’s flourishing.
Old records reveal that Tsunetane and his heir were known as “Bengayatsu dono” suggesting their connection to Bengayatsu in Kamakura. Intriguingly, the name “Bengayatsu” evolved from “Betsugayatsu”. This was the valley where Tsunetane lived and its name derived from his administrative title. “Bengayatsu” could also be written as “Benigayatsu” leading many to believe that the name Benitake comes from Bengayatsu.
