Dying of the plague but still granting permission. That’s the story of St Mobhi’s Church. We stand here now, before a place with a long history. St Mobhi’s Church is more than just a building. It is a landmark in Glasnevin. This Church of Ireland church has witnessed centuries of change. It is a testament to faith.

The story of St Mobhi begins long before the current structure. Back in the sixth century, St Mobhi founded a monastery here. St. Mobhi was an early monastic saint. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. This monastery became the basis for the early settlement of Glasnevin. Imagine the scene. Monks studying and praying. The River Liffey flowing nearby.

Mobhi, also known as Berchan, wasn’t just any abbot. He was a teacher. His monastery in Glasnevin was a renowned school. Influential Irish saints like Columba studied here. Canice, Comgall and Ciarán also learned from Mobhi.

Legend says Mobhi’s school had about fifty students. The students’ huts were on the west side of the river. One frosty night, the bell rang for matins. Columba crossed the frozen river for the service. Mobhi praised Columba’s bravery. The students then found their huts moved to the east bank closer to the church.

Mobhi held a special place in Columba’s life. As Mobhi lay dying of the plague in 544, he gave Columba permission to found the School of Derry. His death marked the end of an era.

Mobhi’s influence extended beyond his life. The 17th-century Martyrology of Donegal tells a story. Columba was preparing to take possession of the town of Doire. He refused without Mobhi’s permission. Two of Mobhi’s followers arrived with the saint’s girdle. They informed Columba of Mobhi’s death. Only then did Columba proceed.

The church we see today has evolved over centuries. The nave was constructed in 1707 on a site with a pre-existing tower. The south aisle and chancel were added in the 19th century. This was done under the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The architecture reflects this gradual development.

Look at the tower. It dates back before 1707. Notice the roughcast rendered walling with granite quoins. The pointed-arch window openings add to its charm. The graveyard surrounding St Mobhi’s Church adds to its historical significance. It is a final resting place for both Catholics and Protestants.

The church is a modest building. It sits within its enclosed graveyard off Ballymun Road. St. Mobhi’s provides a place of worship for incoming Protestant families. Stepping through the gate, you’re met by a sense of tranquility.

Today, St Mobhi’s Church stands as a reminder of Glasnevin’s rich past. It connects us to the story of St Mobhi. He was a teacher, a saint and an important figure in Irish history. His legacy lives on in this sacred place.
