The Golden Buddha, a masterpiece from the Sukhothai Dynasty, weighs over five tons of solid gold. Imagine the sheer opulence. This wasn’t always apparent. The statue was covered in stucco and colored glass, a disguise meant to protect its value from invaders. It became an unremarkable figure, residing in a temple of minor significance. Then, in 1955, during a relocation, the plaster chipped, revealing a glimmer of gold beneath. The discovery astonished everyone. As the remaining plaster was carefully removed, the true splendor of the Golden Buddha emerged. The unveiling coincided with the 2500th anniversary of Gautama Buddha’s passing, adding a layer of spiritual significance to the event.
