Nestled amidst the gentle slopes and eucalyptus-lined streets, lies Scripps Ranch, a vibrant community in the heart of San Diego. Scripps Ranch isn’t just another neighborhood. It’s a place where history whispers through the leaves of ancient trees and where a strong sense of community binds its residents together. E.W. Scripps, a newspaper publisher, envisioned this community in the late 19th century. He, along with his half-sister Ellen Browning Scripps, purchased a vast expanse of land in 1890. They initially acquired 400 acres for $5,000, a seemingly small price for what would eventually become a thriving community. Scripps Ranch was initially a barren, dry mesa. Scripps transformed it into his personal oasis, naming his estate Miramar, after a castle in Trieste, Italy. He eventually expanded his holdings to a remarkable 2,100 acres. He planted citrus groves, pines, and eucalyptus trees, many of which still grace the landscape today. You can almost picture E.W. Scripps overseeing the construction of his dream home, an adobe structure inspired by North African architecture. The heart of the estate was a paved courtyard with a central fountain, surrounded by turreted rooms. Ellen resided at Miramar until 1897. E.W. remained until 1917, running his newspaper empire from this serene retreat. Scripps Ranch has faced its share of adversity. In October 2003, the Cedar Fire swept through the southern part of the community, tragically destroying over 300 homes. Yet, in the face of such devastation, the community’s spirit remained unbroken. They rebuilt, stronger and more united than ever. Today, Scripps Ranch boasts a population of over 36,000. It’s a place where families thrive and where neighbors become lifelong friends. The legacy of E.W. Scripps lives on, not only in the mature eucalyptus trees that line Pomerado Road but also in the strong sense of community that permeates every corner of Scripps Ranch. Miramar Reservoir, nestled within the community, offers a tranquil escape for boating and fishing enthusiasts. The Scripps Ranch Civic Association, a testament to the community’s engagement, acts as a town council. It advises the city on local matters and publishes a comprehensive monthly newsletter, hand-delivered by volunteers to over 12,000 households. Scripps Ranch isn’t just a place to live; it’s a place to belong.
