The Aviation Club Tennis Centre may not look like much from the outside, but it has a rich history, dating back to its humble beginnings in 1993. The Dubai Tennis Championships, now a prestigious ATP 500 and WTA 1000 event, first started here as a modest ATP 250 tournament. Back then, there wasn’t even a proper stadium. Imagine watching a match surrounded by temporary scaffolding, with only 3,000 seats available across all courts. The Aviation Club Tennis Centre has seen some dramatic transformations since those early days. By 1996, the Dubai Tennis Stadium was erected, finally giving the tournament a proper home. Over the years, the surrounding area has also flourished. Restaurants and entertainment venues, like the Irish and Century Villages, sprung up around the stadium, creating a vibrant hub for fans. In 2012, a 293-bedroom hotel was built right on site, offering convenient accommodation for players and officials during the two-week event. The Aviation Club Tennis Centre has also witnessed its fair share of tennis history. Roger Federer dominated the men’s singles here, winning eight titles between 2003 and 2019. Justine Henin achieved a similar feat in the women’s singles, claiming four titles between 2003 and 2007. The Aviation Club Tennis Centre has been a battleground for some of the greatest names in tennis, their triumphs and defeats forever etched into the stadium’s legacy. The Aviation Club Tennis Centre also made a significant stand for equality in the world of tennis. In 2005, the Dubai Tennis Championships became the third professional tennis event, after the US Open and Australian Open, to implement equal prize money for men and women. This decision solidified the tournament’s commitment to fairness and recognition of the incredible talent on both sides of the net.
