Åremyr

Did you ever hear of a lake named after a bird and a water source? Nestled in the heart of Almindingen on Bornholm, Åremyr is just such a place. Åremyr translates to “Eagle Bog,” a name derived from its earlier designation, “Orre Myr.” “Orre” is the Swedish word for black grouse, a bird once introduced to the area in the 1890s. Although the black grouse didn’t last, the name, evoking a sense of wildness and mystery, did. Originally a high moor, or myr, Åremyr fed water like a natural spring, or “åre,” hence the current name. Imagine Almindingen in the early 19th century, not the forested wonderland we see today, but a vast expanse of open moorland. Åremyr, then a true bog, played a vital role during the difficult years of the Napoleonic Wars. The local forester, Hans Rømer, began peat extraction from the bog around 1815, providing a much-needed source of fuel for the islanders. Today, Åremyr is a picturesque artificial lake, a testament to Rømer’s ingenuity and the ever-changing nature of Almindingen. A popular destination, Åremyr offers a tranquil escape. A walking path circles the lake, less than a kilometer long and easily accessible for all. Benches and tables invite you to linger, while a designated campsite provides a base for larger groups.
