How did a small prayer movement in East Prussia grow to become the Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. we see here in Dusseldorf today? The Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. has a fascinating story. It is rooted in faith and community.

The Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. is part of a larger movement. This movement strengthens Christian faith through community and evangelism. Its origins trace back to Christoph Kukat. Kukat organized prayer groups in East Prussia in the late 19th century. These groups drew inspiration from the emerging neo-pietistic movement.

In December 1910, Christoph Kukat made a controversial request. He wanted to end choir work within the prayer groups. He feared it would hinder the groups’ work and lead to secularization. However, many groups, especially in the Rhine-Westphalian industrial area valued their musical work with trombone and vocal choirs. They didn’t want to give it up. These groups and some in East Prussia decided to separate from Kukat’s organization.

In September 1911, they formed their own association. It was named Evangelisch-Lutherischer Gebetsverein. This new group worked with like-minded pastors within the regional Protestant church. Preachers from the Gebetsverein were appointed as community workers. They cared for the Masurian members of the Westphalian regional church.

After part of East Prussia became part of Poland, the Gebetsverein continued and expanded its work there. During the Nazi era, the group aligned with the Confessing Church. They did not join the pro-Nazi “German Christians”. World War II and its aftermath led to the decline of the Gebetsverein in former German territories and Poland.

Today, the Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. is mainly active in North Rhine-Westphalia. Around 35 communities support it. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. emphasizes the Lutheran confessions. Martin Luther’s Small Catechism holds a prominent place in their teachings.

The Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. continues to offer online services every Sunday at 2:30 PM. This allows people from all over to connect.

Consider the words of Martin Krause. He reflects on the Holocaust and the need for remembrance. He also speaks of God’s grace and invitation to repentance and forgiveness. Krause encourages everyone to “Examine everything and hold on to the good.” This reflects the Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V.’s commitment to faith and community. They seek guidance and courage in the face of injustice.

The story of the Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. is one of faith. It shows community and resilience. From its roots in East Prussia to its present-day presence here in Dusseldorf. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Gebetsgemeinschaft e.V. continues to be a place where people can come together in faith. They find strength in community.
