The English Wesleyan Church. Originally known as the Wesleyan Chapel it stands proudly at the foot of St Thomas Mount. Its story begins long ago in 1827. A generous gift made it possible. Mrs Isacke wife of Captain W B Isacke donated her land to the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. She wanted a place for the English-speaking community to worship.

John Law a skilled architect designed this Gothic beauty. He crafted a sanctuary where the English community could find solace and spiritual guidance. The construction was completed within two short years a testament to the community’s dedication and the builders’ skill.

But the English Wesleyan Church’s story is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about the people who worshipped here. The missionaries who brought their faith and dedication. It’s about the unwavering commitment of individuals like Mr Whitebread and Reverend John Millns. They saved the church from being demolished in 1949. They prevented its transformation into a school. Their efforts secured the church’s place in Chennai’s history.

The church’s location is significant too. It’s near where Thomas the disciple of Christ was martyred. This proximity adds a layer of spiritual meaning to this place of worship.

For nearly two centuries the English Wesleyan Church has stood as a beacon of hope and faith. It’s a reminder of the power of community generosity and perseverance. Today it continues to serve as a spiritual home for many in this vibrant city. Let’s step inside and experience the quiet reverence of this historical landmark.
